Dr Simon further commend the state government for some measures taken so far but he noticed the violation of social distancing in most market he talk about the faringada tomatoes market, the way people flocks in there is almost like a trade fair, u see all manner of people there, he said government should put security personnel there and space the traders at least 400-500 metres away from each other and regulate the numbers of people going in to buy, according to him you see people from Bauchi state and other places trooping into the state no safety measures taken, he said God forbid if you have one person with the coronavirus many persons will be affected in the state and same goes to the tarminus market and he said is suicidal he call on the governor as the chief security of the state to do something very urgent.

Eleven more people have recovered from coronavirus (COVID-19) and have been discharged in Lagos State.

This brings the total number of people discharged in Nigeria to 20, while two deaths were recorded.

The state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, announced this in a series of tweets on Thursday.

He revealed that the persons – two females and nine males – have fully recovered and have tested negative for COVID-19, weeks after they tested positive for the disease.

Following their recovery, Sanwo-Olu revealed that the 11 persons were discharged from the government facility in Yaba to return home to their respective families.

He thanked frontline health workers and other experts for their service in the bid to curtail the spread of the disease and treat infected persons.

The governor, however, decried the community infections that have begun to surface, stressing that it was not the time to relax but keep vigilance.

He gave an assurance that with the support of the people, Lagos and Nigeria, in general, would hoist a flag of victory over coronavirus.

Bishop Oyedepo Donates Ambulances, Test Kits, Food, Others To Lagos And Ogun States

By Peter Akpah

Bishop Oyedepo Donates Ambulances, Test Kits, Food, Others To Lagos And Ogun States

Bishop David Oyedepo
Living Faith Church Worldwide (Winners’ Chapel International) has made donations of ambulances, test kits, personal protective device (PPE) to the Lagos and Ogun State governments, to assist in the fight against the coronavirus (COVID-19) scourge in Nigeria.

The church also donated medical resources and food items as part of its phased and continuous support to the Nigerian authorities in taming the COVID-19 pandemic and the biting effects of the lockdown on poor citizens of the country.

According to a statement from the church signed by Professor Sheriff Folarin, Chairman, Editorial and Media Board, Living Faith Church Worldwide (LFCWW), “The global coronavirus pandemic has reached dangerous dimensions, with a spike in infection numbers around the world, and inevitable adverse effects on the global economy and on virtually all areas of human endeavour.

“Living Faith Church as a faith-based organisation with a global outreach wishes to register its support, in entirety, to the Nigerian government and global efforts to win the war against this unseen but common enemy of mankind.”

He said that among the medical/health resources donated are two state-of-the-art ambulances with capacity for first aid, test and treatment of those infected or on emergency resulting from the infection.

Professor Folarin noted that “Each of the ambulances will be donated to Lagos and Ogun States, to boost the disease control measures and treatment.

“Other items include 20 cartons of latex hand gloves (10 boxes per carton), 10 cartons of disposable face masks (40 boxes per carton), 40 pieces of the infrared thermometer (gun-shaped type), 500 pieces of personal protective device (PPE) Hazmat suit, two boxes of the pulse oximeter (10 per box), and two cartons of blood pressure monitor (10 per carton).

“Taking delivery of the ambulances and other medical items on Monday, Presiding Bishop, David Oyedepo maintained that the church would continue to render medical, material and spiritual support to the government and the people to ensure that the situation in Nigeria does not explode or become intractable. Bishop Oyedepo personally upholds the principle of giving and catering for the needy, which are the hallmarks of the ministry under his leadership.

“Also received are food items, which are meant for immediate distribution as palliatives to the less privileged who are likely to be the worst hit by the lockdown. These are 400 bags of rice, 150 bags of beans, 400 bags of garri, 500 gallons of vegetable oil, among other items.”

According to the professor, “Living Faith Church Worldwide has a long history of being one of the few churches that often rise to the occasion to support human rehabilitation during and after major crises in Nigeria.

“Also, it has, over the years, rendered humanitarian assistance to some countries in Africa during post-war reconstruction. These usually run to hundreds of millions of Naira in financial value.

“In 1994, Winners’ Chapel was the first faith-based organisation outside Rwanda to send materials and money for the rehabilitation of a people traumatized by a 100-day genocide that took the lives of about one million Rwandese.

“The famous stone-age Koma Hill settlement discovered in the late 1980s had its first school, church, potable water and modern clothing in the 1990s at the instance of Winners’ Chapel. One of the little kids from Koma was sponsored by the church up to tertiary education and had his first degree from Landmark University and is currently completing his Master’s degree programme at Covenant University. These two institutions are owned by Winners’ Chapel.

“Aside from the annual responsibility of disbursements of tens of millions to rehabilitate state, federal and international roads in Ado-Odo Ota Local Government, Ogun State, there is the David Oyedepo Foundation (DOF), which offers scholarships to indigent students and children of hundreds of poor Church members, from primary to university levels. The church’s engagement in offering scholarships to indigent students began in 1992.

“There was however a significant curve between 2012 and 2019, as scholarships offered were in excess of 1.3 billion naira (specifically N1,368,627,763).”

He said that “The ministry barely makes noise about this philanthropy and responsibility to the nation and children of God, inspired by its belief in the biblical admonition that all acts of kindness should not be for showmanship- ‘for, the Father who sees your secret kindness shall reward openly.’ Nevertheless, the church will not relent in offering help and partnering with government at all levels and responsible agencies, to tame COVID-19 and other monsters such as hunger and illiteracy, that have, in more recent times, short-changed humanity.

Sultan Led JNI Condemns Misleading Attitude of Some Islamic Cleric

By Peter Akpah

Coronavirus: Sultan-led JNI condemns misleading attitude of some Islamic clerics*

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Abubakar, has described as unfortunate and misleading preaching by some Islamic clerics on government’s directives for citizens to stay home.
Mr Abubakar spoke on Monday through Khalid Aliyu, the secretary of Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), the umbrella body for Nigerian Muslims, headquartered in Kaduna State.

The Sultan urged Muslims to avoid a repeat of the trend in Italy, “which was partly due to non-adherence to expert advice over the pandemic.”

Citing Suratun-Nahl, chapter 16:43 of the Qur’an, where Muslims are asked to “…ask those who know if you know not,” Mr Abubakar urged adherents of Islam to act only based on knowledge and not their whims.

As a way of checking the spread of COVID-19, state governments have banned large gatherings. Yet some, particularly religious leaders, have flouted the directive.
Two days ago, after the Kaduna State government banned such, some mosques in the state held the Friday congregational prayer.

This resulted in the government arresting Aminu Usman and Umar Shangel, two imams who flouted the state directive by leading the congressional prayers last Friday.

Mr Abubakar said this “clearly depicts sheer whims and caprices of their myopic worldview, stark ignorance of reality based on genuine knowledge and medical scholarship.

“It is, however, regrettable that the negative actions of such preachers incite innocent Muslims, who are unaware of the serious health implications of adhering to such empty dispositions that invariably endanger humanity.

“Nonetheless, it should be noted that the issue of plague and/or pandemic is not new throughout human history, either at various times or places, the Muslim world inclusive.
“For the information of discerning minds, there were prominent incidents of plagues and epidemics in Islamic history, which caused monumental mortality.

“As a result of which various safety steps were taken, so as to curtail the spread of such viruses. Such steps extended to the stoppage of congregational prayers, including Jumu’ah (Friday) prayer with an interim halt to the performance of Hajj (pilgrimage).”

*Scriptural arguments*
The Sultan also detailed occurrences of plagues which had warranted the same measures observed in the current pandemic.

He identified the plague of Amwas, in Palestine, which occurred in 18 AH/ 639; the plague of al-Jarif 69 AH/688; the plague of al-Fatayat or al-Ashraf 87 AH/705; the plague of Muslim Bn Qutataybah 131 AH/748.

He said some of these plagues had far-reaching implications such as “social distancing — leaving the town and hiding on mountains and in caves, (suspension) of congregational prayers and Jumu’ah (Friday) prayers, temporarily.”

*Muslims should watch out*
He said there is a difference between a preacher and a Muslim jurist. The former, he explained, “has no locus-standi to issues of Fatwa (Islamic legal opinion), as it is the case with some of the Nigerian preachers in recent past, particularly their strong disposition on Covid 19, as they don’t have requisite qualification, whereas, it is the function of the latter.”
“Such self-appointed jurists, and/or accidental scholars, preachers should desist from venturing into what they have no knowledge of, in the interest of the overall safety, security and common goal of the Muslims.”

The Sultan urged Muslims to undertake a lot of fasting, particularly during the month of Sha’aban (eighth month of the lunar calendar) as prescribed by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

He also urged Nigerian medics to watch out for their safety, while treating COVID-19 patients, to avoid collateral damage on the health system.

He urged the government to take necessary proactive measures by providing emergency manpower, equipment, as well as more testing kits and isolation centres to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is not overwhelmed.

Plateau Get New Archbishop Most Rev Mathew Ishaya

By Peter Akpah

INSTALLATION OF MOST REV. MATTHEW ISHAYA AUDU AS THE CATHOLIC ARCHBISHOP OF JOS. WELCOME AND VALEDICTORY REMARKS BY ARCHBISHOP IGNATIUS A. KAIGAMA, 31.03.2020.

My dear brothers and sisters, please allow me to use my remaining last few minutes as a member of the Catholic Archdiocese of Jos to express a very profound gratitude to God Almighty for giving me the privilege and honour to serve Jos Archdiocese and its wonderful people for very close to twenty years.

Let me first of all welcome you all to this ceremony that brings on board a new chief shepherd and thus a new phase in the history of Jos Archdiocese. Thank you for coming.

I thank God for using the Holy Father, Pope Francis, to give Jos Archdiocese the gift of a new Archbishop in the person of Most Rev. Matthew Ishaya Audu. Welcome Archbishop Audu and “bon travail”

I also thank the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Antonio Guido Filipazzi for his very dedicated service to the Nigerian Church and I welcome him in absentia as well as the Cardinals, the Archbishops, the Bishops, the priests, the Religious men and women and lay individuals and groups who had expressed the desire to be here to participate in this ceremony but for the outbreak of the coronavirus which has restricted the number of participants to fifty as permitted by the Government of Plateau State.

We welcome Barr. Dr. Simon Lalong, here represented by the Secretary to the State Government and the Chief of Staff, Government House. We warmly welcome our brothers of the other Churches represented by the CAN Chairman, Rev. Dr. Soja Bewarang and our Muslim friends and brothers whom the Emir of Wase, Alhaji Muhammed Sambo, who is also the Plateau State Chairman of Jama’atu Nasril Islam and Vice President General, Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs, mandated the

Galadima of Wase, Alhaji Umar Mustapha to stand in for them. The Plateau State Traditional Council is ably represented by the Long Goemai of Shendam.

We welcome you the few present here, representing the many others who would have loved to come but the Church had to comply with the good restriction measure adopted by the Government as a proactive way to vigorously fight the coronavirus. Even with this small congregation of fifty, we will go ahead to do the canonical installation of the Archbishop, by the grace of God. It is being streamed live in the social media. Jos Archdiocese has promised that a more elaborate and festive celebration will take place after the unfortunate coronavirus malady must have become a thing of the past. May God have mercy on us and bring to a very quick end this global scourge. For the sake of the sorrowful passion, Lord, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

May I crave your indulgence to ask that for my failings as a human being during my tenure as chief shepherd of Jos Archdiocese, may the Lord forgive me and those who felt offended by my words and actions to also forgive me. All I did for Jos Archdiocese as Archbishop and lately as Apostolic Administrator, was in the best interest of progress, harmony and growth in the spiritual, pastoral and social spheres. For those who were happy with my decisions and pastoral initiatives, please continue to be happy and for some who were offended or hurt by my pastoral decisions, may God bring you healing and relief.

I can confidently and happily say that you members of the family of God in the Archdiocese of Jos were loyal and supportive of all projects: pastoral, educational, medical, social, etc. I pray that our modest achievements will be improved upon in the years to come by you and your new pastoral leadership.

I had promised you that we would install the new Archbishop in a roofed proposed Divine Mercy Cathedral building. Your commitment to the project was very edifying and exemplary. You sacrificed as individuals by donating one block per person and as families, one bag of cement per family. Your parishes gave “in toto” the proceeds from

tithes and harvest for many years. The new Cathedral building would have been roofed now, but for some technical reasons. I assure you that the funds needed for the roofing have been already collected by you and will be safely entrusted to your new Archbishop. Please continue the good work and may our Blessed Mother intercede for us and make this new era one of greater blessings and success.

I must stress that you the wonderful people of Jos Archdiocese have been a solid pillar of support and encouragement to me. May this new phase under the leadership of Archbishop Matthew Ishaya Audu be characterized by greater development, peace, understanding and unity in the Archdiocese and indeed in the entire Ecclesiastical Province of Jos.

I wish to also extend my appreciation to the past and present Governors of Plateau State whose collaboration and support I enjoyed: Gov. Joshua Dariye, Gov. Jonah David Jang and now, Gov. Simon Bako Lalong. They all supported my work of inter- religious dialogue and the search for peace and harmony between Muslim and Christians and among ethnic groups.

From the bottom of my heart, I thank the Vicars General, the Chancellor, the parish priests, religious, chaplains, members of Church societies, Knights, women, men, youths, children, catechists, evangelists, Word of Life newspaper staff, domestic and chancery staff (cooks, drivers, office staff), etc. Thank you for making my years of stay and work in Jos Archdiocese a very memorable one. Like Simeon I say, “At last O powerful Master, you give leave to your servant to go in peace, according to your promise ” (Lk 2:29).

May God bless all of you in the Catholic Archdiocese of Jos and indeed Plateau State very richly and bring to completion the work he has started in you (cf. Phil. 1:6). Let us keep each other in fervent prayer.
Peace be with you all.

How China Won The War on Covid-19, As Nigeria Case Still Raising By The Day, And 2 Deads Recorded.

By Peter Akpah

How China won the war on COVID-19 Nigeria Should follow the method used.

The number of COVID-19 cases continue to rise in countries around the world, and more countries are being added to the list.

Wuhan has become safer than most countries now and this is because they are using technology to fight the virus. How you may ask… Big Data and Mass surveillance to tackle the Coronavirus.

Facial recognition is used to analyse and process all the data using machine learning. This has assisted the country to not only contain the virus but to also see who may have it.

China has shown that technology can be the best way to fight this biochemical warfare and as it stands the COVID-19 crisis, has pushed many companies globally towards using technology to operate remotely.

This should be taken as an opportunity to upskill and prepare for the new world order that will require everyone to be technologically savvy.

If the South African government can start implementing technology within its respective departments, there’ll be better information dissemination and it will assist towards reducing infections. With all the measures being taken to reduce the spread – Technology may just be our answer in this regard.

Here’s how technology is assisting:

· Drones are now being used to transport medical samples and conduct thermal imaging and South Korea authorities are tracking potential carriers using cell phone satellite technology

· Self-driving cars are deployed by hospitals to distribute medication to different patients – without them having to queue

· The use of technological mapping to curb the outbreak

· In some hospitals in Asia, Artificial Intelligence is used to keep track of patient’s recovery and gives information on how they can best help curb the spread of Covid-19. They are also using robots to disinfect hospitals and deliver medical supplies

· Applications such as Zindi, mobilises data scientists across the world to use AI and machine learning to tackle complex problems and will offer them cash-prizes to find solutions to curb COVID-19

We are dealing with a pandemic that’s requiring the use of technology to be maximized for better communication so we can find some normality in this very crisis.

Big data and analytics in China are being used to attempt the highest epidemic control ever. However, in some parts of the world, data protection regulations have delayed delivery of crucial information about the spread of the outbreak.

Yesterday Health Minister Zweli Mkhize confirmed that South Africa now has 1280 Covid-19 infections. Gauteng still has the highest number, followed by Western Cape and Kwazulu-Natal.

South Africa is officially in lockdown for 21 days, which is the main way government is using to significantly restrict Covid-19 transmissions.
